VDR hotel certification

New criteria for certified corporate travel and convention hotels

The hotel certification department of the German corporate travel association VDR has updated the audit criteria for certification of business travel and convention hotels. The test committee has adapted more than 125 criteria to current standards.

"The VDR is very well familiar with the requirements of travel managers; however these requirements change as time progresses. Our reaction is to take up these current trends and to adapt the criteria for the status as Certified Business Hotel and Certified Conference Hotel," said Daniela Schade, member of the VDR management committee.

The new criteria for the hotels certified by the VDR now also include WLAN in all public areas, modernized technology equipment, and a non-smoking standard. Both in business travel and in convention hotels, particular attention is attached to mattress hygiene and care. In a next project, the hotel certification department will establish criteria for sustainability in hotels. According to a recent analysis of MICE hotel qualities conducted by the IFH Institute for Hospitality Management, hotels all over the world fail to react appropriately to event inquiries.

The VDR is annoyed with these results. "Unfortunately many hotels earned bad grades in the IFH analysis. With the status as Certified Conference Hotel, which identifies hotels particularly suited for events, convention planners will be certain to find what they're looking for. These VDR-certified hotels will warrant professional client support – inquiries will be answered extensively, with an exact description of services and definite prices," said VDR president Dirk Gerdom.

The Certified Business Hotel seal is based upon 60 criteria. Any hotel, irrespective of its classification, may qualify as Certified Business Hotel if it meets at least 55 of these requirements. They range from cell-phone reception and Internet access over adequate work space in rooms all the way to check-in from 15:00 hrs. The Certified Conference Hotel status also requires compliance with further meeting-relevant criteria such as dedicated meeting area, standardized quotation and accounting processes as well as professional event support. All hotels in Germany are eligible to qualify for the certificate provided they meet the defined specifications. All information on criteria and prices may be downloaded at www.certified.de.
