On the way to becoming Europe's greenest hotel city

Visitors to Gothenburg in the western part of Swedencan be sure to contribute to eco-friendliness and sustainability when bedding their weary heads on hotel pillows in most of the city's hotels, because more than 80 percent of these have been awarded an environmental certificate. The objective of this Sustainable Gothenburg project launched two years ago is to have all hotels in the city earn this award as soon as possible. Nine Gothenburg hotels are currently going through an environmental education program, and others will follow in autumn of this year.

But tourists are not the only group of visitors interested in sustainable accommodation; the MICE industry is also registering increasing demand for eco-friendly event and conferences locations. Many of the major hotels are giving a good example: 84 percent of the 31 members of the Göteborgshotellen hotel group and a remarkable 90 percent of the Storhotellgruppen's 20 major hotels have an environmental certificate. In addition to the hotels, the project "Sustainable Gothenburg" also covers transports, locations and event arenas.
