Spielwarenmesse takes over SPIEL

A logical move: On January 1, 2022, Spielwarenmesse took over the event Internationale Spieltage SPIEL in Essen. The Nuremberg trade fair and marketing services provider thus becomes the new owner of the world's largest consumer fair for board games.

„I am very pleased to have found a partner that can continue the success of this fair. “

Spiel will continue to be held at the Essen exhibition centre and organised from Bonn by Dominique Metzler, the family company's director of many years' standing, and her team. Florian Hess, member of the executive board of Spielwarenmesse eG, serves as an additional director. The event has a history stretching back nearly 40 years: In 1983, the idea to establish a gathering for boardgame enthusiasts became a reality. Today, Spiel is the largest consumer fair for board, card and role-playing games in the world.

Traditionally in the autumn new game products from home and abroad are introduced to a broad audience at the Essen exhibition centre. Every year, around 200,000 visitors flock to the event – and the number is growing. The Nuremberg organisers want to retain the format as a separate fair in its original form.

"I am very pleased to have found in Spielwarenmesse eG, with its experience in fairs, a partner that can continue and further develop the success of this fair for the coming decades as well", says Dominique Metzler, who with Rosemarie Geu successfully established and built up her family business over recent decades.
