The first stone for the new Confex has been laid, an event that in itself holds symbolic significance, even though it will be some time until the new venue goes live. Koelnmesse provisionally expects the venue to be complete by mid-2024, ready for business in the autumn of the same year. The newly built Hall 1, on the other hand, was officially inaugurated this week.
Together, Hall 1 and the new trade fair, congress and event location Confex represent the future - not only of trade fair business in Cologne but also of the trade fair and convention site itself, which will enable Koelnmesse “to demonstrate what is has to offer as an events location and emerge from the turmoil of the past few months even stronger,” to use the words of CEO Gerald Böse.
„Confex will be a blueprint for trade fair formats in a post-coronavirus world.“
“With the structural and technical qualities it offers, Confex will be a blueprint for trade fair formats in a post-coronavirus world and will help ensure we are well positioned in the trade fair world of the future,” underlined CEO Böse. The new location is a particularly good example of how the changing requirements in the trade fair business can be met – the various-sized conference rooms allow for flexible use and, in combination with the recently completed Hall 1, Confex functions as a trade fair, convention and event location all at once, offering the space and flexibility for new trade fair formats.
Once complete, Confex will be the first venue in Cologne to have a capacity of around 5,500 people, making it an important magnet for new events for the city. The design of the new building is the work of Cologne-based architecture firm JSWD Architekten.
Another important signal of the location’s attractiveness is the newly built Hall 1. In the coming autumn, the new exhibition hall, which was completed on schedule despite the coronavirus pandemic, will open its doors for the first time as a conventional trade fair venue for Anuga (October 9 to 13, 2021).www.koelnmesse.com/news
